"Oh, that's what it is!" she signed.
Lisa (Deaf), from India, was amazed by the explanation of "cheese." She didn't know what it was or what it looked like. Cheese is not a part of the Indian diet.
"The explanation is so good!"
This was Lisa's response as she and other Deaf in India were watching a DOOR DVD that explained unfamiliar words and places in the Bible story they were watching/studying.
The Bible story came from II Samuel when David's father, Jesse, sends supplies with David as he went to check on his brothers.
“… brought bedding and bowls and articles of pottery. They also brought wheat and barley, flour and roasted grain, beans and lentils, honey and curds, sheep, and cheese from cows' milk for David and his people to eat. For they said, "The people have become hungry and tired and thirsty in the desert." 2 Sam 17:28-29”
Presently, DOOR has 2 Deaf teams working to produce what the Deaf call the "DEEPS" for each story translated.
The "DEEPS" are the signed equivalent of some of the resources hearing translators have available to them for a written translation project, e.g., Bible commentaries and other such resources as Translator's Workplace or Notes. But, they also contain sections developed especially for Deaf CBS (Chronological Bible Storying or Study) needs and scripture-use.
"Goliath was enormous!" Liz later exclaimed.
Before, when she watched the story of David & Goliath, she thought Goliath was fairly tall, but after watching the "DEEPS" DVD she learned how tall Goliath really was, the weight of his armor and other such details, as well as David's size in comparison."
"It explains how things are in the culture at the time of the story, and even includes pictures and maps! Wow!"
Lisa was delighted with how clear it made the stories.
"We need more of this; we need to continue this work!"
BECOME A PARTNER!
As you know, DOOR depends on God's gracious provision through the generosity of His people. We work hard to be good stewards on behalf of sending churches and dedicated donors.
We believe the Lord has a unique and strategic role for DOOR to play in coming years as we keep His "Great Commission" front and center. We hope that you share in our excitement.
Would you prayerfully consider becoming partners with us?
Thank you for sharing our vision for one of the most unreached people groups, the Deaf, and keeping us in your prayers.
