Camille Beckham

Hearing North AmericanCamille Beckham
DOOR-International, Chiang Mai, Thailand
Communications & International Coordinator, Translation Consultant in training

Camille was born in San Francisco, grew up in Moraga, California, and graduated from Campolindo High School. She credits her parents and her church (Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church) with leading her to Christ when she was five years old and instilling in her an early interest in international missions and languages.

On a short-term mission trip to Haiti in 1982, Camille met a little Deaf boy, and really enjoyed her time with him.  She wished she could communicate with him more.  She began her involvement in the Deaf community in 1983 at Stanford University, where she later received her undergraduate degree in Human Services with a concentration in Deaf Studies.

Camille served as Deaf Ministries Coordinator for Joni and Friends for 2 1/2 years, and then earned an M.A. degree from Gallaudet University (the only Deaf university in the world) in Mental Health Counseling.  She has been a nationally certified Sign Language interpreter since 1989.

Camille has been on the DOOR staff since 1991. She moved to Budapest, Hungary with a Deaf team in 2000 to establish DOOR-Europe/Asia. For several years, she traveled throughout Europe, recruiting students and following up with graduates.

Camille and her team moved to Chiang Mai, Thailand in late November 2005.  She now travels frequently to each of DOOR's Deaf Christian Leadership Training Programs to assist the staff with communications, administration, scheduling, recruiting, follow-up, and Deaf/hearing cultural issues.

Camille is taking an increasingly active role in DOOR's partnership effort with Wycliffe Bible Translators to translate Chronological Scripture into the many Sign Languages of the world.  Besides her current job with DOOR, she is also training to be a Translation Consultant with Wycliffe International.
