1. My church wants to start a Deaf ministry/church. What should we do?
Pray for God to give you guidance, wisdom, and strength. Apply to a DOOR training center for one year of training! We will teach you the Bible. We will teach you how to be a Deaf Christian leader. We will teach you how to start Deaf churches. If you apply to DOOR, apply with a team from your city! (For more information about applying to be a student at DOOR, see questions 6 and 7 below.)
If you can't come to DOOR right away, and want to start something now, start a Deaf Bible study. Invite your Deaf friends. Pray together. Pray for God to lead you. Pray for the Holy Spirit to give you understanding. Start at the beginning of the Bible and learn the stories together. Read and sign a story from the Bible. Discuss together what it means. Pray more, that you will remember what you have learned. Pray for each other's needs.
It is difficult to explain many details about Deaf church planting on a web site. Come visit a DOOR training center and talk with us more about it in person!
2. I am a Deaf Christian. OR I have a Deaf friend/relative who is a Christian. What do you have for Deaf Christians?
Wycliffe International is in the process of checking DOOR's Chronological Bible Storying curriculum on DVD for accuracy and quality of translation. Our prayer is that these DVDs will be available in various Sign Languages in the future.Pass It On Services, in partnership with DOOR, is in the process of producing an evangelism tool for Deaf adults called "God Connect How?" (Deaf title) / "How Can We Have A Relationship With God?" (hearing title). Keep checking DOOR's web site for updates on completion and availability.
Book of Hope International, in partnership with DOOR, has produced a dynamic evangelistic tool targetted towards Deaf children. Interspersed with computer-generated, photo-realistic animation are live-action scenes, starring a DOOR Deaf missionary family, the Sorensons (currently serving in Thailand). 3. I am a Deaf Christian. I have a Deaf friend or relative who is NOT a Christian. What do you have that I could offer them?
If you are a Christian, the best thing you can offer them is Jesus! You can meet them and share Jesus with them in Sign Language. 4. Can I visit one of DOOR's training centers?
Sure! Please contact us in advance so we know you are coming. If you don't contact us, you might come to visit during our vacation and no one would be there!
5. Do you have short-term mission opportunities for Deaf people?
Yes! We have 1 kind of short-term mission opportunity:
Celebration/cleaning teams: At the DOOR-Africa training program, we invite short-term teams to come to our "celebration" after the translation teams have completed their 7-9 month stay at DOOR-Africa. You would get to know our students, encourage them, and pray for them as they return to their home countries. Then the short-term team does a deep cleaning of the training center and any minor repairs that are needed before the next group of students arrives. This can be an all-Deaf team, a mixed Deaf/hearing team, or an all-hearing team. The dates of the upcoming graduation/cleaning short-term mission opportunities are as follows. Please click on the name of the training center to contact them about bringing a graduation/cleaning team on these dates.
- DOOR Africa, Nairobi - usually scheduled the end of November or beginning of December (please contact DOOR International for the exact dates each year)
